Railway Freight Car Air Reservoir: An Indispensable Part of the Air Brake System

Ever since railways began using compressed air as the driving force behind braking, brake valves of every type have relied on compressed air to control the braking and release of a train. As the vessel that stores this compressed air, the air reservoir has become an indispensable part of the air brake system. Mounted securely beneath the car body, it accumulates air supplied by the locomotive compressor and releases it on demand to operate the brake cylinders, allowing a heavy freight train to brake safely, smoothly and consistently.

Why Compressed Air Storage Matters

Compressed air is the working medium of the modern air brake. Without a reliable container to hold it, the system could not deliver a stable and repeatable braking response. The air reservoir therefore acts as an energy buffer: it accumulates air while the train is running and provides a dependable volume whenever the driver applies the brakes, while also smoothing pressure fluctuations and allowing condensate to settle and drain.

Evolution of Reservoir Construction

In the early days of China's railway freight cars, the lap-joint type air reservoir was widely used. In this design, the cylinder body and the end caps were joined in a lap-joint (overlap) configuration and then welded together, with a controlled overlap of 10 mm. Two interface types were offered — threaded connection and flange connection — and the preferred type changed over time along with the way air brake system piping was connected. This evolution reflects how reservoir design has continuously adapted to improvements in the air brake system.

From Lap-Joint to Embedded Design

To solve the problem of cracks in the cylinder body of lap-joint reservoirs and to raise the automation level of reservoir manufacturing, a new regulation came into force on 1 May 2006: all newly built railway freight cars must use an embedded (inserted) structure, with the hanger seat formed as a pressed hanger seat.

To improve the internal cleanliness of the piping, newly built 70 t-class railway freight cars are fitted with stainless steel embedded reservoirs made of TCS345 material. At the same time, the drain plug adopts an embedded anti-theft structure. To save installation space for the brake equipment, some freight cars use a combined reservoir — two reservoirs of different volumes combined into one dual-chamber reservoir.

Classification by Function

Classified according to their role in the braking system, air reservoirs can serve as a supply reservoir, an auxiliary reservoir, an accelerated release reservoir, a pressure reduction chamber, and more. Each type supports a different part of the braking cycle.

TypeFunction
Supply reservoirStores compressed air as the main source for the brake system.
Auxiliary reservoirHolds the air charge that powers service braking of each car.
Accelerated release reservoirSpeeds up brake release for quicker train recovery.
Pressure reduction chamberHelps regulate and step down pressure within control valves.

Materials and Construction

The reservoir body is normally fabricated from high-strength carbon steel plate such as Q345R or 16MnR, chosen for its excellent weldability and pressure resistance. Heads are formed and welded to the cylindrical shell, and every weld seam is inspected to guarantee pressure integrity. Internally, the vessel is treated with anti-corrosion coatings, while the exterior receives a primer and durable topcoat to withstand the harsh conditions of outdoor rail service. Each unit undergoes hydrostatic testing before delivery to confirm it meets the required safety margin.

Applications

  • General freight wagons and heavy-haul trains
  • Container flat cars and bulk material hoppers
  • Tank cars for liquids and gases
  • Refrigerated and specialized rolling stock

Quality and Safety Standards

A quality railway freight car air reservoir must comply with strict national and international standards, including TB/T (China), EN (Europe) and AAR (North America) requirements. Reliable manufacturers perform non-destructive weld inspection, dimensional verification and pressure testing to ensure each reservoir delivers years of dependable, maintenance-friendly service in high-vibration environments.
